Jose Fernandez

José Fernandez was an American librettist and actor best known for writing the book for the iconic Broadway musical The Me Nobody Knows (1970), a groundbreaking work that brought the real voices of inner-city youth to the stage. Collaborating with lyricist Herb Schapiro and composer Gary William Friedman, Fernandez crafted a deeply human and raw theatrical experience based on the writings of New York City schoolchildren. The show was hailed for its authenticity, emotional power, and innovative structure, earning multiple Tony Award nominations and influencing a generation of socially conscious musical theatre.

Fernandez’s most enduring contribution to musical theatre, however, came as the librettist for Fame – The Musical. Based on the 1980 film, Fame premiered in 1988 and became a global phenomenon. Fernandez’s book captured the dreams, struggles, and determination of students at a performing arts high school, weaving together themes of ambition, identity, and artistic growth. His work played a key role in transforming the film into a stage hit that has since been produced around the world and beloved by youth theatre programs and audiences alike.

In addition to his work as a writer, Fernandez had a background as a performer, which informed his understanding of stage dynamics and character development. His librettos often blended realism with energy and heart, giving voice to underrepresented communities and aspiring artists.
