Michael Cristofer is an American playwright, screenwriter, director, and actor best known for his Pulitzer Prize– and Tony Award–winning play The Shadow Box. Born on January 22, 1945, in Trenton, New Jersey, Cristofer began his career as an actor before turning to writing and directing, ultimately becoming one of the most respected multi-hyphenates in American theatre and film. His work often explores deep emotional terrain, focusing on themes like mortality, identity, and family with honesty and compassion.

Cristofer achieved his greatest theatrical acclaim with The Shadow Box (1977), a powerful drama that centers on three terminally ill patients and their families in a hospice setting. The play was lauded for its raw, humanistic portrayal of death and dying, and it earned Cristofer the 1977 Pulitzer Prize for Drama as well as the Tony Award for Best Play. The success of The Shadow Box established him as a major voice in American theatre and led to a television adaptation, which he also directed.

In addition to his stage work, Cristofer built a successful career in film and television. He wrote screenplays for major motion pictures, including The Witches of Eastwick (1987), The Bonfire of the Vanities (1990), and Gia (1998), an HBO biopic starring Angelina Jolie that earned multiple Emmy and Golden Globe awards. His work as a screenwriter is noted for its character-driven narratives and dramatic complexity.

Cristofer also directed for both stage and screen, including his own play Breaking Up and the 2001 film Original Sin, starring Angelina Jolie and Antonio Banderas. In the 2010s, he returned to his roots in acting with recurring television roles, most notably as Phillip Price in the acclaimed USA Network series Mr. Robot. His presence on screen brought a quiet intensity and gravitas to his performances, demonstrating his range as a performer as well as a writer.

Throughout his career, Michael Cristofer has been celebrated for his insightful storytelling, emotional honesty, and commitment to exploring the human condition. Whether on stage, on screen, or behind the scenes, he has continued to influence generations of theatre artists and audiences through his deeply humane and courageous body of work.
