Eyre gained widespread acclaim as the Artistic Director of London’s National Theatre from 1988 to 1997, where he revitalized the institution with a bold mix of contemporary plays and fresh interpretations of classics. In addition to his work on stage and screen, Eyre has authored several non-fiction books, including National Service, a memoir of his years at the National Theatre, and What Do I Know?, a collection of essays and reflections on theatre, politics, and the arts. He is also a frequent commentator on the role of culture in public life, advocating for the enduring relevance of theatre and the importance of artistic freedom and public funding for the arts.
