Lee Pockriss (1924–2011) was an American composer and songwriter best known for his contributions to pop music and musical theatre during the mid-20th century. With a gift for catchy melodies and clever lyrical partnerships, Pockriss helped shape the sound of the 1960s with several enduring hits and notable stage works.

Born on January 20, 1924, in Brooklyn, New York, Pockriss studied music at Brooklyn College and later at Yale University. He served in the U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II before launching his career as a songwriter. He found early success in the Brill Building era of pop songwriting, often collaborating with lyricist Paul Vance.

Together, Pockriss and Vance wrote a string of popular hits, including the whimsical novelty song “Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini” (1960), which topped charts and became a cultural phenomenon. They also penned the hit “Catch a Falling Star,” recorded by Perry Como, which became the first RIAA-certified gold record and remains one of Pockriss’s most celebrated compositions.

In addition to his work in pop music, Pockriss wrote for musical theatre. He co-composed the scores for the Broadway musicals Tovarich (1963), starring Vivien Leigh, and Ernest in Love (1960), a charming adaptation of Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest. Both works showcased his ability to blend traditional Broadway sophistication with contemporary flair.

Throughout his career, Pockriss also wrote for film and television, including children’s programming and animated features. His work demonstrated a versatile range—from novelty songs to romantic ballads to theatrical scores—each marked by memorable melodies and accessible charm.

Lee Pockriss passed away on November 14, 2011. His music continues to be remembered for its infectious joy, timeless appeal, and significant impact on American popular and stage music.
