Kitt Lavoie has directed more than 125 shows in the United States and Europe, including original productions of more than fifty plays. He is the author of 32 produced plays and musical books, and is the only living playwright to have had their work produced on all seven continents. His plays have been translated into Spanish, Hungarian, Norwegian, and Latin. Plays include Sabbatical (Lincoln Center), Kiki Baby (Theater for the American Musical Prize), The Median Line (Herbert J. Robinson Award for Dramatic Writing), realer than that (winner, Samuel French Festival; published by Samuel French), Bank & Trust (Vintage Press, 2014), And it came to pass in those days… (Collective Press, 2015), and Good Enough (Vintage Press, 2015). Also a filmmaker, he produced and co-wrote the feature-length documentary Best Worst Thing That Ever Could Have Happened, about the various life paths, in and out of show business, of the teenage actors who made up the original 1981 Broadway cast of Stephen Sondheim’s Merrily We Roll Along (New York Times Top Ten Films of 2016, Newsweek's Favorite Documentaries of 2016, Playbill's Top Five Theater Documentaries, Esquire's 20 Best Documentaries of All Time, Official Selection, 2016 New York Film Festival). His short film Rainbow Rabbit Reliant won multiple acting, directing, audience, and best film awards on the festival circuit. He works regularly as associate to director Lonny Price, including the Tony-nominated revival of 110 in the Shade and the Emmy-nominated PBS productions of Company, Sweeney Todd, and Sondheim: The Birthday Concert. Kitt holds a Masters of Fine Arts in Directing from The Actors Studio Drama School at New School University. He is Associate Professor of Acting and Directing at NSKI Høyskole (Norwegian Actors College) in Oslo, Norway, and sits on the Drama Faculty at the New School University College of Performing Arts in New York City. He is a member of the Dramatists Guild, the Literary Managers and Dramaturgs of the Americas, and the Stage Directors & Choreographers Society.
