Biography
Joseph Stein
Joseph Stein was an American playwright and librettist best known for writing the book for Fiddler on the Roof, one of the most celebrated and influential musicals in theatre history. Born on May 30, 1912, in New York City to Polish-Jewish immigrant parents, Stein grew up in the Bronx and earned degrees from City College of New York and Columbia University. He began his professional life as a psychiatric social worker, but his passion for comedy and storytelling eventually led him to a writing career in radio and television.
Stein’s early writing work included collaborations with legends like Zero Mostel and Sid Caesar. He was a staff writer for Your Show of Shows, where he honed his skills in comedy and structure. He soon transitioned to the stage, co-writing the book for the 1955 musical Plain and Fancy, a light-hearted show about Amish life that marked his Broadway debut. This early success helped establish Stein’s reputation as a gifted storyteller with a knack for blending humor and heart.
His most iconic achievement came in 1964 with Fiddler on the Roof, for which he wrote the libretto. Adapted from the stories of Sholem Aleichem, the show tackled themes of tradition, cultural change, and resilience in a Jewish shtetl in Tsarist Russia. Working with composer Jerry Bock and lyricist Sheldon Harnick, Stein crafted a narrative that resonated far beyond its cultural roots, becoming a global phenomenon. Fiddler on the Roof won nine Tony Awards and became the longest-running Broadway musical of its time.
Stein’s other Broadway credits include Zorba, Take Me Along, Irene, The Baker’s Wife, and Rags. While not all were commercial hits, many have been critically re-evaluated and revived, admired for their emotional depth, craftsmanship, and insight into family, identity, and societal transformation. Throughout his career, Stein’s books were known for their integrity, strong characters, and balance between humor and poignancy.
Joseph Stein continued to write and mentor until his later years. He received numerous honors, including the Dramatists Guild’s Lifetime Achievement Award. He passed away on October 24, 2010, at the age of 98, leaving behind a body of work that continues to influence musical theatre writers around the world. His legacy endures in every heartfelt line of dialogue, particularly in Fiddler on the Roof, which remains a touchstone of the American musical canon.
