Karen Zacarias is a Latina playwright. She received her B.A. from Stanford University and went on to receive her Masters in Creative Writing from Boston University. She has written many plays including The Book Club Play, Mariela in the Desert, Destiny of Desire and Native Gardens. She was the first playwright-in-residence at the Arena Stage in Washington, D.C., and she established and founded The Young Playwrights' Theatre in D.C. She is also the founder of the Latino Theatre Commons.
