Analysis
Orpheus is the tragic lover of classic myth. He is a poor musician with little to his name. He has no family and is ward to Hermes. All he has is his music; when he plays his song, he is like a god. He falls in love with Eurydice at first sight. He gives her all of his heart immediately, having faith that love is all they need to weather any storm. Though he has little to offer her, he vows that he will write her a song so moving, nature itself will strive to care for them upon hearing it. Their love blossoms in spring, flourishes in summer, but is tested when fall and hardship come. While Eurydice works hard to prepare them to survive winter, Orpheus remains solely focused on his music, to her frustration and increasing desperation. When Eurydice leaves him for Hadestown, Orpheus is beside himself with despair at her loss. He sneaks into Hades’ underground factory, willing to do whatever it takes to bring her home with him once more. He is able to secure her release by playing a song so moving that even Hades himself cannot refuse him. They are permitted to leave under one condition: Orpheus must lead out Eurydice in blind faith, not falling prey to his doubts by checking to see if she follows him. Orpheus makes it to the final steps of their journey before making the grievous mistake of turning to her too soon; as such, he loses his love forever.
