Hermes is a storyteller and the narrator of Hadestown. Together with The Fates, he sets out to sing the old, sad song of Orpheus and Eurydice, young lovers doomed to be parted forever. Orpheus is Hermes’ ward; he looks upon the romantic young musician with pride and affection. He is sympathetic to the lovers’ plight.
Hermes is an omniscient god, but is colloquial and laid-back--a deity who lives amongst the people, rather than on high. He tells his tale with the natural energy and flair of a showman.
