Text

The manager kept telling me I was too beautiful just to be a coat checker -- and he asked me to become a dancer. He said I’d make a lot more money. [...] I thought about it and when I realized I might actually do it, I quit. One reason is, I always ask myself, would my father be proud of me for what I’m doing? Would my mother? They’re both great people and think the world of me. They’re back in Ohio, where I’m from, but I don’t ever want to disappoint them. After I quit, I didn’t know what to do. I needed a job. That’s when I decided to “dress for success.” I bought myself the plainest business suits I could find, put my hair up, and stopped wearing makeup. And guess what? It worked. Nobody bothered me. In the evening, I went to FIT -- The Fashion Institute of Technology. Now, I’m a successful designer and I’ve been in the company for over five years without one man taking advantage of me.
