Context
In the previous act, Joe Keller’s guilt in shipping faulty airplane engine parts is exposed, as well as his act of dodging responsibility and blaming his former partner, who now sits in jail. After the argument, Joe’s son Chris left, and now Joe and his wife Kate are waiting for him to return. Their friend, doctor Jim Bayliss, has stopped by to check on them, and tells Kate that he knows about Joe’s guilt, and has in fact suspected it for a long time.
