Context
This scene is the culmination of Laura’s deliberate plan to drive her husband, the Captain, to madness. She has been hinting that Bertha might not be his child and has convinced the Doctor that the Captain needs to be committed straight away. Laura is calculating and sure of herself, while the Captain is declining mentally. When she reveals her plan to the Captain, the scene culminates in the Captain displaying uncharacteristic violence towards his wife.
