Context
Michael has just returned to his family home after being stationed in St. Petersburg for years. His sister, Liubov, is engaged to a baron, but Michael objects saying that Liubov should only marry for love. Against the advice of his younger sisters, he resolves to save Liubov from the arranged marriage.
