Context
Chris was released from jail six weeks ago after serving eight years. He finally goes to visit his mother, Cynthia, who has fallen on hard times. Cynthia didn’t know Chris got out of jail, and she doesn’t really know the details of what happened to put him there. They have an awkward conversation where they are both clearly ashamed of what they’ve become and don’t know how to be around each other anymore. They make small talk until Cynthia asks him what happened.
