Context
Kate is Gar’s ex-girlfriend. They were on the verge of marrying, but Gar couldn’t pluck up the courage to ask her father for her hand in marriage and she also had some doubts about his future financial stability. She is now married to a respectable doctor from Dublin. Kate comes to see Gar to say goodbye before he emigrates to America. However, she is thrown by his angry and aggressive behavior (resulting from his jealousy). This is not the Gar she remembers, and the situation is left awkwardly

START: Kate: (off ) Hello, Gar.
Private: Kate!
Kate: ( on) This isn’t a healthy sign, drinking by yourself.
Private: Talk! Talk!
Public: What – what are you doing here?
Kate: I hear you’re off to America.
Public: First thing in the morning.

END: Public: (recklessly) Tell him I was asking for him. Kate Good-bye, Gar.
Public: (in same tone) Enjoy yourself, Kate. And if you can’t be good – you know?
(Public goes off with Kate.)
