Context
This scene occurs after Yelena and her stepdaughter Sonya have forgiven each other’s past transgressions and made peace. Sonya is deeply in love with Astrov, but is reluctant to inquire after his true feelings. Yelena volunteers to interrogate him and relay the information back to Sonya.
