Text

ELLIE You know that’s not how it happened.

A silence.

CHRISTA Thank you for coming--

ELLIE I didn’t kiss you.

A silence.

ELLIE (cont’d) You kissed me.

CHRISTA You let me.

ELLIE I didn’t stop you.

CHRISTA You let me.

ELLIE On the cheek. That’s what friends do.

CHRISTA Not just the cheek.

ELLIE It started on the cheek. That’s what I let you do.

CHRISTA And then you left.

ELLIE It was the end of the semester.

CHRISTA But you left. You just disappeared. You didn’t answer when I called. You didn’t write me back.

ELLIE I know. I’m sorry.

CHRISTA You were the only person I ever told. I have known since I was twelve and you were the first person I ever told and then you disappeared and now I feel lonelier than I ever have. And I have felt very lonely.

ELLIE I’m sorry. It was weird.

CHRISTA I told you. And then you just left.

ELLIE No. I kept being your friend. You told me long before I left. And I was always leaving. You told me because I was leaving. Christa, you told me because it was safe. Because if I reacted badly, I would go away.

CHRISTA I told you because I trusted you.
