Act One
It is an evening in Victorian London, and Mr. and Mrs. Darling are bustling about their home in preparation for an elegant evening out. Their children, meanwhile, are playing make believe: Wendy, the eldest, is “Mother” and John, the middle-child, is “Father”. It is past 6 PM, and Nana -- the dog, who acts like a nanny -- barks at Michael, the youngest, to try to get him to get ready for bed. Wendy and John attempt to dance a waltz (which they know their parents will be doing when they go out); Michael is obstinate about going to bed and complains about being left out of the game. In response, Mrs. Darling scoops Michael up and they join in the dance (“1, 2, 3”). Mr. Darling, in a hurry, bursts in, struggling with his tie. As Mrs. Darling helps her biggest baby (her husband) get ready for their evening, Mr. Darling questions the appropriateness of their dog, Nana, playing nursemaid to the children. He suggests Nana might be better situated outside of the nursery, but Mrs.
