Overview
Synopsis
With summer coming to an end, the Cuyahoga High Marching Beavers are preparing to entertain at another highly anticipated football season. But with dwindling band members and huge budget cuts, the Beavers are threatened with extinction. Tuba-playing band captain Elliott and his best friend, perfectionist flutist Laura, are determined to save the Beavers and play at the Festival of Champions. However, when ex-football player Jake is forced to join the band in order to graduate, the already rough-around-the-edges marching band begins to fall out of step. Can Elliott and Laura find a way to unite the band and save senior year? Band Geeks will have audiences reliving their high school days as they follow several misfits trying to make their mark at Cuyahoga High. By the end of the show, audiences will be embracing their inner geek and smiling from ear to ear.

Context
Tommy Newman, Gaby Alter, and Mark Allen began working together as graduate students at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts in the Musical Theatre Writing program. Band Geeks was developed in partnership with Goodspeed Musicals in the spring of 2007. The three presented a preliminary draft of Band Geeks in the fall of 2007 and had subsequent readings of the show. In 2009, Gordon Greenberg joined Band Geeks as a co-book writer and director. Summer has come to an end and the Cuyahoga High Marching Beavers are arriving at band camp to brush up on their skills before the start of a highly anticipated football season. Elliott, the newly appointed captain of the Beavers, is a tuba-playing band geek with something to prove (“Captain of the Beavers”). As he nervously calls roll, it becomes apparent that the Marching Beavers have a lackluster band with only nine members (“Band Geeks”). Among the misfits are Laura, Elliott’s best friend
