Plot

ACT ONE

In Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, weatherman Phil Conners does all he can to delay his inevitable annual trip to Punxsutawney, where he’ll be reporting on the town’s famous Groundhog Day ceremony and festivities. An arrogant, self-centered man, Phil dreads the visit; he hates small towns, he hates the people who live in small towns, and finds the whole experience beneath him. In spite of his protests, Phil is forced to travel to Punxsutawney, where the townspeople hope that the groundhog sees his shadow on the morrow, signifying an early arrival of spring for the year (“There Will Be Sun”).

Phil wakes up the morning of February 2--Groundhog Day--in an even more foul temper than before. He hates the local radio deejays who wake him up on his clock radio, he hates the wake up call he receives from the bed and breakfast’s proprietor, and he especially hates everyone in Punxsutawney.
