Plot

Act One

In present day New York, Agnetha prepares to leave her apartment. She is catching a flight to England but is clearly emotionally unstable. Before she leaves, she allows a wave of grief to wash over her and howls until she can scream no more. Apologizing through the wall to her neighbors, she leaves for the airport.

Time shifts back to 1980 and we see Nancy tending to her garden. She has sent her 10 year-old-daughter, Rhona, round to her mother’s house with the secateurs but wonders whether she should have gone herself. Her mother is a difficult woman and her oldest daughter, Ingrid, refuses to go. Ingrid and Rhona have been fighting over make up so she decides to split them up and sends Rhona, while Ingrid goes out with her friends. But Rhona is not back yet…

In his rented room, Ralph has decided that today is the day for some action. He is fed up with his landlady and is restless. Ralph spots a young girl on the street and befriends her, before bundling her into his van. He
