School Girls; Or, the African Mean Girls Play takes us into Aburi Girls Boarding School in Ghana, West Africa. There we meet four high school girls who are ruled by the head Mean Girl, Paulina. The relationships are rife with the competition, pettiness, insecurity, and ambition that most women who have been in high school can relate to. When a young biracial girl named Ericka transfers to their school from America, just days before a recruiter for the Miss Ghana Pageant is said to arrive, Paulina loses her cool. Tensions rise between Paulina and Ericka and the other girls have to pick sides. Plans are foiled, secrets are spilled and feelings are hurt as the girls try to navigate this tricky thing known as adolescence. School Girls was inspired by the 2011 Miss Ghana pageant, in which the judges named a biracial American-born, Minnesota-raised woman named Yayra Erica Nego winner of the Miss Ghana pageant. They lied about her qualifications in an attempt to become the first West African Country to stand a chance at winning the Miss Universe Pageant. Yayra didn’t place.
