Introduction

Queer theatre is a diverse body of work by artists who are just as varied. At its core, queer theatre examines the lives of people who identify as LGBTQ+, documenting their experiences with authenticity and empathy.

Key Dates, Events & Genres

  • 1927 - Wales Padlock Bill, which prohibited “perverse” subjects on Broadway
  • 1934 - Hays Code, which prohibited “perverse” subjects in film
  • 1968 - Mart Crowley’s The Boys in the Band debuts off-Broadway
  • 1969 - Stonewall Inn Riots, an event that inspired Doric Wilson's 1982 play Street Theater
  • 1991 - Angels in America premieres in San Francisco, and opens on Broadway in 1993
  • 1992 - The organizations Equity Fights AIDS and Broadway Cares merge; the non-profit charity Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS raises money to support people impacted by AIDS and HIV
  • 1996 - RENT premieres
  • 2018 - The Prom cast performs at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, marking the first televised LGBTQ+ kiss in the Parade’s history
