Juan: I don’t think the Communists or even Mussolini would be worse.

Torre: It can. Hitler has moved into Poland.

Juan: I’ve seen the news reels at the theatre. Poland has become a prison. The Germans! Didn’t they learn from the Great War?

Torre: Mi amigo, there are things you don’t see in the news reels. These prisons, the ghettos... I have friends at the Spanish embassy in Berlin who tell me the Nazis have camps. People go in and they don’t come out. They simply disappear.

Juan: ¿Qué pasa? What people?

Torre: Jews mostly, but others as well. Gypsies, bohemians... anyone who is not Aryan. They have trains, and the people line up and get on, like lambs.

Juan: Can this be true? Until recently, I had never heard the word “Aryan”. Superior race, bah. It is a curse to be Polish.

Torre: What?
